Can i use a NVR as POE switch

Can i use a NVR as POE switch?

What You Need to Know for a Security Camera System. A common question for those setting up a new networked security camera system is whether or not they can power their cameras with their Network Video Recorder (NVR) as a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch. This question comes up fairly commonly from both DIY builders and industry professionals conducting custom camera installations. This article will explore the possibilities of using your NVR as a POE Switch, and what to think about when designing your security camera system.

What is an NVR?

NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. An NVR is a type of recording device used to capture video footage from IP cameras on a local area network. An NVR is built to hold and display video footage over a network to show video from IP cameras, and it is different from DVRs that are developed for an analog camera system. NVRs capture digital video streams and then store the recorded footage using the built-in memory. An NVR may allow you to control the camera's view while displaying the video, and an NVR will also allow remote viewing of a live feed or recorded footage.

What is a PoE Switch?

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet, and PoE switch is a network switch that provides electric current and data connectivity to connected camera devices using a single Network Cable, like an Ethernet cable. PoE eliminates the need to run an extension cord by providing power on the same wire as the data cable. This reduces install variables with the wiring installation and eliminates multiple paths of wires to the mounted device. Therefore, PoE will simplify the installation work for you and your installation.

Can NVRs Function as a PoE Switch?

1. Built in PoE ports. This is simple, many modern NVRs have very specialized built in PoE ports, and your NVR can power the camera directly by plugging it into the NVR. This means you literally just plug in your PoE compatible device and NVR, and it is truly that simple. You can connect PoE compatible cameras directly into your NVR for power via the built in camera PoE ports.

2. No built in PoE ports. If your NVR does not have a PoE port, you will not be able to power your IP cameras with it. If this is the case, you would have to purchase an additional PoE switch to be connected to the cameras, typically with the NVR that does the recording and management.

3. Compatibility Concerns If you have an NVR with PoE capabilities, make sure the cameras you are using will be compatible with your NVR. Most IP cameras are compliant to the IEEE 802.3af (PoE) standard, while some will require the higher power provided by the above standards of IEEE 802.3at (PoE+). You want to confirm that both the cameras and the NVR you are using do not have any compatibility issues.

Advantages of Using an NVR with Built-in PoE

Simplified Installation: Having less cable and equipment will result in a cleaner installation. Reduced Cost: You will save money by not purchasing a separate PoE switch. Simplified Management: By using products that are all connected to just one NVR, system management will be more straightforward.

Disadvantages of Using an NVR for a PoE Switch

Limited PoE Ports: PoE ports on an NVR could limit the number of cameras you can plug-in, which is one reason to ensure the NVR you select to purchase will meet your needs. Power Budget: Each NVR will have a power budget which will determine how much power will be utilized and matched to connected cameras. Make sure the required power for camera(s) does not exceed the budget.

Summary

In summary, whether or not an NVR can replace a dedicated PoE switch will depend on the specific model as NVRs can offer built-in PoE ports. In this case, a dedicated PoE switch will not be needed and this will reduce labor with only a plug and play connectivity. Always be sure to check for device compatibility and that all power requirements are contained within the manufacturer's specifications. By understanding equipment capabilities, an affordable reliable security setup will be developed and will meet your needs.
